German Football Attendance Map

Bill's Sports MapsTake two of our visual tour of football. Bill Turianksi brings us an attendance map for German football clubs from the 2006-07 season. It includes the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga and the top 8 clubs attendance-wise from the 3rd tier Regionalliga. The size of the club's emblem is proportional to the club's attendance, a handy way to get a feel for how "big" every club is.

A few things that caught my eye. Regionalliga club St Pauli, despite being dwarfed by city rivals Hamburg, have an attendance higher than nearly anyone in the 2. Bundesliga and even better than Bundesliga club Energie Cottbus. The average crowd in the Bundesliga is nearly 40,000, over ten times bigger than the Regionalliga average. Other than Hertha Berlin, the Central and Eastern parts of the country have very poor crowds. I'm not sure if this is a factor of economics or sparse population or what. Interesting stuff.
