It's windmills, the Red Light District and Total Football in the latest installment of Bill Turianksi's maps - yes, the Netherlands. Bill takes a somewhat different approach this time, with interesting results. Instead of proportional club logos he's got a small profile of each club in the Eredivisie (Dutch football's top league) - logo, uniforms, trophies, stadium info and more. All of these profiles are in a box that point to the city the club is based in. He's also got a list of average attendances, this time from the current 2007-08 season. His previous efforts have been based on last season's numbers. A few things stand out to me. The difference between top and bottom is enormous, more than any of the countries covered so far - Ajax drawing crowds at a modest 16x the rate of little Excelsior. Likewise Feyenoord more than triple their city rivals Excelsior and Sparta combined. I guess this is not a huge surprise for a country the size of Holland, there are only so many fans to go around, the country is relatively small and easy to get around. It's also impressive to me the crowds that both Heerenveen and FC Groningen get, considering neither are especially large cities nor have they won anything at all. I'm guessing both act as magnets for fans from the larger regions they represent. And I also have to call attention to the absence of ADO Den Haag. Despite being the third-largest city in the country, no club fromThe Hague has won the title since 1943. Strange indeed.
