  • Book Reviews  ( 5 items )

RootsThere are few things I love more than a good soccer/football book. I can still remember a classic find back in high school, the Hamlyn World Encyclopedia of Football. How did this obscure British almanac find its way to a used book store in Houston, Texas in the 1980s? Truly, no idea. But it opened up a new world to me and I'm forever grateful. I try to do justice to some of the classics that I've read over the years as well as some of the current stuff that I'm working my way through. I'm a really big fan of books that explore a certain piece of the game's history or a region that I'm unfamilar with. I hope to shine a light on some of the real quality out there.

  • Club Histories  ( 7 items )

Football Soccer HistoryDetailed histories of a handful of the world's football clubs. While there's probably no way to do them all, I don't see why we can't try. The club profiles give a snapshot but sometimes you want more than that, you want to really dig your teeth into what a club is all about. That's what club histories are for. This game of ours has such a rich history and so much of it is uknown to all but the most serious of nuts. To learn the evolution from a group of boys kicking around a ball on the street to multi-million dollar operations. So far we've got a few big ones - Liverpool, Milan, Real Madrid - and some not so big ones - Eintracht Braunschweig and Derry City. Contributions are very welcome as I'd really like to expand this section of the website.

  • Football Economy  ( 4 items )

wyn grantA regular look at the business side of football. Each article examines some of the game's major developments over the previous month. The focus is mostly (but certainly not exclusively) on the UK. We take a look at developments from the Big Four and multi-million pound transfer deals to stadium issues in non-league football and clubs facing administration and everything in between. Ever since the introduction of the Premier League, Sky Sports and clubs being floated on the stock market the game has been riding a financial whirlwind and the Football Economy column examines it in full detail.

  • Kit Aesthetics  ( 5 items )

chris ketchamNow that teams and sponsors have recognized a cash cow for what it is, they see fit to shove new kit designs down the fans throats every year or two. This is a column that deals with the specific appeal, or lack-there-of, of team uniforms across the soccer/football globe. It's also somewhat arbitrarily judgmental, and it goes off on tangents, but this is the internet after all. It's also chock-full of pictures of all the uniforms, team crests, and whatever else I stumble across in the quest to help you, gentle reader, appreciate the appeal of soccer uniforms-- something that has fascinated me ever since time began (or in my case when I started playing youth soccer in the late 70's).

  • Playing From Amnesia  ( 2 items )

Playing from Amnesia takes a look at some of the footballers that have made the beautiful game so beautiful. From Pele to some of the less recognizable greast of the game, we will look at the attributes that made them so special and what impact they had on the game at the club and international levels. Additionally, we will take a glimpse at their lives off of the field and after they have stepped off the pitch for the final time. If you want to request a player to profile or want to share some of your own memories about a player, be sure to send an e-mail. In case you are wondering, the column name comes from famed pundit/player/manager Ron Atkinson, who used the term to describe a footballer playing past his prime.

  • The Groundhog  ( 4 items )

The GroundhogI am a football ground enthusiast and Brighton fan who has become disillusioned with League football, and so have fled to the charming and often eccentric world of non-league football and the grounds there. My site is basically travelogs of my experiences at non-league football grounds, mainly close to where I live in the north midlands, but a few further afield. I still watch Brighton now and again, but only to pick off another of my remaining '92' league grounds!
